Support for Solar Continues to Grow

September 22, 2020

We’ve recently taken a look at the strength of solar in recent months, as a hot and bright summer combined with reduced energy demands have shown just how valuable solar can be in our efforts to reach net zero by 2030 – we have continued to see a big demand for Solar PV and are set to beat last year’s installations.

Furthermore, this sentiment has been expanded on as the first ever Citizens’ Assembly on climate change shows the support for solar is continuing to not only grow, but to also thrive.

The Citizen’s Assembly is designed to be a comprehensive representation of different demographics of the population. With the climate change topic in mind, 81% of those surveyed said they support the widespread use of solar in the UK showing that the support for the technology isn’t just willingness, but eagerness too.

One of the bigger selling points for many had been the flexibility of solar installations and how they could be located in many different areas. With further advances in long term battery storage, how that energy could be used in the future when production of energy from solar is lower, is fundamental.

The production is another factor that may be changing, following another recent piece we had covered showing how changing technologies may make solar more effective than ever before. With recent grants announced to encourage more efficiency in homes, this could lead to further savings on installing solar PV options.

Solar hadn’t been the only target here either, as there had been overwhelming support for offshore wind too, with up to 78% of members agreeing that because of the UK’s windy nature, it should play a core part of the UK’s goal of net zero by 2050.

There had been some discussion for other areas around solar however, as location and environmental impact, ways to incentivise and facilitate uptake, visual design, and manufacturing were all points that needed consideration for renewable solar to penetrate the market.
