Top Myths Surrounding Solar PV

July 13, 2020

Net Zero is something that is at the forefront of our minds here at Utility Trade Group, with the transition to renewable energy a vital string to the bow.

The demand for renewable energy is on the rise, and this is likely to continue after Rishi Sunak’s announcement that households will be offered a £10,000 grant to make their homes more energy efficient.

Solar energy is just one cog of the renewable energy wheel but is a vital one at that – our recent blog post outlining the 1 Megawatt of power we’ve generated in a year is perfect evidence of that. That said, there is still an aura of scepticism around the true benefits this product can bring, and a number of myths that are associated with it.

Below, we analyse 3 of the most popular ones:

Solar Panels do not work in cold or snowy conditions

This is factually incorrect – solar panels work in all different types of weather conditions. Cold and wintery days generate the same amount of energy as their warm and sunny counterparts, and cloudy weather has no bearing on the amount they can generate. Furthermore, a study has recently shown that solar panels are actually more effective in cooler climates than warmer ones – perfect for just the times you’re most likely to need to need them.

Installing Solar Panels costs a lot of money and requires a lot of time

As long as you’re using a reputable manufacturer, such as the ones we use at Utility Trade Group, solar panel installation is simple, straight forward, and cost-effective. The panels are constructed and installed in such a way that they can operate in harsh weather and remain effective throughout. Furthermore, solar panels actually preserve the portion of the roof that they cover and are easily installed and removed.

Solar Panel prices are based on the size of your home

Again, another common myth that is circulated on the topic of solar panels, is that they cost more with the bigger home that you have. This is incorrect – in fact, pricing and requirements are based on the needs of the homeowner, as well as the surrounding areas of the home. If your home has easy access to sunlight and is not obstructed, then the cost of fitting these to a large home will be very similar to that of a small one.
